Backed by three decades of professional experience in and around the field of archeology, Stephen Lee Harvey, MA, RPA has been active on his own as a cultural resource management consultant since 2022. Prior to his self-employment, he served as a senior archaeologist at ASM Affiliates, Inc. for several years, as well as the heritage and tribal relations program manager at the Cleveland National Forest on behalf of the U.S. Forest Service. In this capacity, he worked closely with tribes in accordance with regulations and requirements, which called for consultations with tribal entities—especially for any federal land projects. As he specialized in Luiseño and Kumeyaay prehistory, he considered these meetings and collaborations, centered on preserving cultural resources and furthering their involvement in legal rights regarding artifacts and sacred locations, a great honor. He previously found success as the assistant base archeologist at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton from 2005 to 2007, as an archeologist and a principal investigator at Environmental and Engineering Management LLC from 1998 to 2005, and launched his accomplished career in 1993 as an archeological survey and excavation field staff member for independent cultural resource contractors.
Mr. Harvey additionally lends his expertise and prowess in the industry as a member of the Society for California Archeology, Anthropology Alumni Advisory Board at California Polytechnic State University, San Diego County Archeological Society, San Diego Archeological Center, and Register of Professional Archeologists, as well as lends his time and effort to such organizations as the Wounded Warrior Projects, Veterans motorcycle Clubs and Activities, and homeless charities. Through the Society of California Archeology, he has been active as a speaker and presenter at numerous meetings and conferences.
Mr. Harvey attributes his success to his parents—his mother, Barbara Harvey, was a leader in early childhood education, and his father, David Harvey, was a high school English teacher for 35 years and a contributor to the community. Growing up, he strived to make the same kind of impact on people’s lives as they did. Additionally, his wife, Nouria, has motivated him throughout his career—including encouraging him to complete his master’s degree, which he said turned a corner for him regarding his professional advancement. Equipped with a Bachelor of Sciences in social sciences from California Polytechnic State University and a Master of Arts in anthropology, with an emphasis on archeology, from San Diego State University, he also stands as a Registered Professional Archeologist and a Principal Investigator with a California Cultural Resources Use Permit with the Bureau of Land management at the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Harvey dreams of shifting gears: as a Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiast, he wants to open his own motorcycle repair and production shop and is currently in the process of acquiring an existing local business. He is happily married with one son, Adam.
